Cigarette Filters and the Environment

Recently, I came across an article somewhere online that made me so mad.  Now, I used to be a smoker (35+ years ago) so I am not bashing smokers per se.  What I am upset about is the careless disposal of said cigarettes without a care for our environment.

The article I read was about how cigarette filters are full of microplastics and when you throw them on the ground, they contaminate the ground when the paper covering deteriorates.  The little plastic fibers disperse with the wind and end up in and on everything around.  These fibers are harmful to plants, soil, water and wildlife.

 That is what made me mad. So, here is a post about exactly what these little things on the end of your cigarette can do if you toss them without consideration as they can take up to 10 years to degrade in the environment. 

Here are some of the negative effects of cigarette filters on the environment:

  • Harm to Wildlife: Many animals mistake cigarette filters for food and ingest them, leading to digestive problems, choking, and even death. Cigarette filters can also entangle and suffocate marine animals, such as sea turtles and seabirds.
  • Soil and Water Contamination: When cigarette filters are discarded on the ground or in waterways, they release toxic chemicals and heavy metals, such as lead, arsenic, and cadmium, into the environment. These substances can contaminate soil and water, harming plants and animals, and potentially affecting human health.
  • Waste of Resources: Cigarette filters are made of plastic, which is derived from non-renewable fossil fuels. When they are littered, valuable resources are wasted, and more energy is required to manufacture new filters.

Despite the negative impact of cigarette filters on the environment, some birds have found a way to use them to their advantage. Researchers have observed that urban birds, such as the house sparrow, are incorporating cigarette filters into their nests as a way to prevent parasites.

Here's how it works:

1. Parasite Prevention: Cigarette filters contain compounds, such as nicotine and ethylphenol, that repel insects and other parasites. By lining their nests with cigarette filters, birds can protect their young from infestation.

2. Nest Insulation: Cigarette filters are also effective at insulating nests, keeping eggs and hatchlings warm and dry. This is particularly important in urban environments, where temperatures can fluctuate more rapidly than in natural habitats.

3. Availability: Cigarette filters are abundant in urban areas, making them a readily available resource for birds that may have difficulty finding natural nesting materials.

While it's interesting to see how some birds have adapted to the presence of cigarette filters in their environment, it's important to note that this behavior does not excuse the harm caused by littering. Cigarette filters still pose a significant threat to wildlife and the environment, and efforts should be made to reduce their use and encourage proper disposal.


To mitigate the negative effects of litter, we must work together to reduce our use of plastic and properly dispose of waste.

Daisy Yellow ICAD Challenge

 Have you ever heard of the ICAD Challenge?  I had heard of it, but I had never participated before. That said, I decided that this year I would join in on the fun and I started making my art each day.

What is ICAD Challenge:

The ICAD Challenge is an art challenge that was started on the Daisy Yellow Art website (www.daisyyellowart.com) several years ago.  The owner wanted to create a fun and easy way for artists to make art every day.

ICAD stands for "index card a day" and that is exactly what you use.  The premise is to make art that is accessible to everyone and by using the common index card for your art, you remove the idea that it has to be "precious" or "perfect".  You are using a throw-away card to make some type of art.

How does the ICAD Challenge work?

This challenge goes from June 1st through July 31st. So for 61 days you make an index card a day.  The owner of the challenge puts out prompts each week that you can use or not.  The idea is not to put any pressure on yourself.  You decide what you make.  You do not have to use the prompts, they are simply suggestions. At the end of this challenge you should end up with 61 little pieces of art to do with as you please.

How do you join the ICAD Challenge?

All you have to do is start.  There is no "official" way to join.  That way, you are not obligated to continue if you have problems keeping up.  This challenge is designed in such a way that beginning artists can join and enhance their skill set. There is no pressure to show your work anywhere but there is an Instagram hashtag you can use if your want to let others see your art. You post your card to your Instagram with #daisyyellowart and that is all you have to do.

Where do you get the prompts?

You can find the list of prompts on the website.  She puts up one week at a time so you cannot get overwhelmed. As I said before, the prompts are simply suggestions and you do not have to use them at all to be in the challenge.

Why would I want to do this challenge?

It's fun! It's easy.  It helps you grow as an artist. It lets you see lots of other people's work to get ideas about techniques and processes.  As I said before, it's fun!

Today I have been exploring ways to reframe and reprogram our minds into a more harmonious and positive state.  It seems that the world has gone crazy with hate and biases and divisive chatter everywhere.  This is making me feel crazy and I have been trying to find a way to stop feeling that way.  I believe if we all would work on our own self-talk behaviors, we could make the world calmer and more pleasant.  I am so tired of all the hatred and vitriol being spewed everywhere!

So I began looking into self-talk--what it is, how it works, how to correct it when it is damaging to us.  You'd be surprised at how much information is around about this topic.  This blog post is a compilation of all the things I found in articles on the internet.


The Chatter Within Your Head: 

Have you ever stopped to listen to the voice inside your head? No, we're not talking about those voice overs, but rather the ongoing conversation we have with ourselves—self-talk. We are going to look at the issue of self-talk today, and uncover how it can sometimes unwittingly sabotage our own progress.

Picture your mind as a bustling café, where thoughts brew and chatter fills the air. Self-talk is that constant dialogue happening within us, shaping our perceptions, beliefs, and reactions. It's like a never-ending conversation with ourselves, influencing our emotions and actions in profound ways.

Visualization:

Self-Compassion: Practice self-compassion and self-kindness. Treat yourself with the same care and understanding you would extend to a dear friend. Replace self-criticism with self-encouragement and self-acceptance.

Boundaries: What they are; Why we need them; and what happens without them


A boundary is a limit or edge that defines an individual as separate from others.
Pretty  simple, huh? This concept may seem silly to talk about, but boundaries are necessary to survive and be happy.

Boundaries: What are they?

Boundaries are the invisible lines that define your personal space, values, and limits. Boundaries are necessary to establish a sense of self, protect your well-being, and maintain healthy relationships. Boundaries can be physical, emotional, or psychological in nature and serve to establish a sense of identity, autonomy, and personal space. They define where one person ends and another begins, delineating personal rights, preferences, and responsibilities.

Boundaries: Why do we need them?


Boundaries play a crucial role in maintaining healthy relationships and individual well-being. They help individuals establish and communicate their needs, desires, and values while respecting those of others. By setting boundaries, people can protect their physical and emotional space, avoid feeling overwhelmed or taken advantage of, and foster mutual respect and understanding in their interactions with others.  

Without boundaries, we may find ourselves constantly giving more than we can handle, feeling resentful and overwhelmed, and experiencing negative consequences such as anxiety and depression. By setting clear boundaries, we can communicate our needs and expectations to others, prioritize self-care, and create a sense of safety and security in our relationships.

Boundaries can manifest in various ways, such as personal space, privacy, time management, emotional availability, and communication styles. They can be flexible or rigid, depending on personal preferences and cultural norms. For example, some individuals may have wider personal space boundaries, while others may prefer closer proximity.

Diva's battle with Pancreatitis

My baby, Diva, is so sick with pancreatitis again.  2 years ago she almost died from it because I did not understand what was happening to her.  Now I am always on the look-out for the symptoms because once a dog has pancreatitis, there is a very good chance that they will have it over and over again. It is like the pancreas has been reset to be extremely sensitive to fat in the diet and responds immediately to any high-fat item ingested.

Diva has been showing the symptoms of this illness for a few days and I took her to the vet to be tested (there is a blood test for it).  Of course, it came back positive and she was given IV fluids and new medications and sent back home.  However, her symptoms did not improve so I took her back for an ultrasound of her abdomen.  


The ultrasound  showed a very inflamed pancreas and possible gall bladder involvement.  She stayed overnight to get more IV fluids, but now I am ready to go pick her up and bring her back home.  I don't like it when she is gone!

So, I have decided to post some information here about pancreatitis in dogs in case someone else needs this information:

Silenced No More: Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women

 Because May 5th was designated by the Congress to be National Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Day, I decided to go ahead and post this.  I wrote it a while back and have been thinking about whether to post it here or not. Since there is a national day assigned to this issue, I decided to go ahead and post it.

I feel quite strongly about this issue and have for some time now.  If you are unaware or uneducated about this issue, it is time for you to know about this problem. It is unbelievable that in today's world, this is such a huge issue.  It sometimes feels as if our world has gone crazy!

This is a long post because its purpose is to educate on this issue.  We touched on this problem once before here, but this post delves even deeper into the subject.  We as a society must act to improve the response to each incident as well as to learn why this is occurring.  Only with education on the topic can we actually make any progress.

The issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) is a devastating reality in North America that disproportionately affects Indigenous communities. MMIW refers to the alarming number of cases involving Indigenous women who have been reported missing or found murdered under suspicious circumstances. Despite the severity of the issue, there has been a lack of action and attention from government officials and law enforcement.

Definition of Missing and Murdered

Indigenous Women (MMIW)

The term MMIW encompasses a complex societal issue that has affected Indigenous communities for decades. It refers to cases involving missing or murdered Indigenous women, including trans women and girls, who have been reported as gone missing or found deceased in suspicious circumstances. This issue impacts not only individuals but entire families and communities, leading to intergenerational trauma.

Importance of Discussing MMIW

The high rates of MMIW highlight the systemic racism, marginalization, poverty, lack of access to resources such as healthcare, education, housing that are faced by many Indigenous peoples in North America. Indigenous people are more likely than any other racial group in Canada to experience violent crime and harassment so it is imperative that we support their communities through these times. Their culture also plays an important role which leads us into our next section

There has been significant damage done including separating children from their families during boarding schools era where cultural practices were prohibited. These policies have resulted in intergenerational trauma, which has only amplified the problem of MMIW.

Despite the long history of this issue, it wasn't until the 1980s that Indigenous communities began organizing to draw attention to it. Additionally, actions from governments and law enforcement have been slow and inadequate due to systemic racism entrenched in our institutions.

This has left families of MMIW feeling unheard and neglected by those who are supposed to serve them. The need for continued advocacy and education surrounding MMIW is crucial in order to address this issue head-on.

The inquiry's final report declared that the ongoing violence against Indigenous women is a form of genocide. Similarly, in the United States, the Savanna's Act was signed into law by President Donald Trump in 2018.

The act aims to address issues such as improving data collection on MMIW, increasing coordination between law enforcement agencies, and training programs for law enforcement officials. Despite these efforts, there is still much work to be done as Indigenous communities continue to face disproportionate rates of violence.
